HARTON

Armstrong, F.M., Major, MiD., 1917
In St. Martin Calvaire British Cemetery, St. Martin-sur-Cojeul, is the Commonwealth War Grave of Major Forster Moore Armstrong, Mentioned in Despatches, serving with the 251st Brigade Royal Field Artillery (50th (Northumbrian) Division), who died 25/09/1917.

He was born in South Shields on 27 May 1876. Son of Joseph Forster Armstrong, MD, and Sarah Jane Armstrong of Westoe House, South Shields. [His father was born 19 September 1841 and had died 5 September 1911. His mother was born 17 January 1853 and died 13 July 1922, aged 69. There is a family headstone in St. Peter’s Churchyard, Harton.]

His brother, William, was born 29 April 1869 and died 16 March 1943, aged 73.

He attended South Shields’ Boys’ High School, being admitted in May 1885. He left in December 1889 to go to Giggleswick School, Yorkshire.

He was a student at Christ’s College, Cambridge University. Graduated as LL.B. in 1899. He was then commissioned into the 3rd Durham Volunteer Artillery in 1902.

He was a solicitor - working for J.M. Moore and Armstrong.

Left £20,958 in his will – dated 31 August 1917 – to his mother and sister (’Gazette’, Thursday 18 April 1918).

He is remembered on the South Shields’ Boys’ High School Roll of Honour (in Harton School) H104.06, on the St. Hilda’s Church Memorial Cross S86.020 and on the St. Michael’s Church Roll of Honour S86.086, Westoe Road, South Shields, on S86.137, and in S86.104 Appendix XI
