John Rutherford Alexander

In Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord, France is the Commonwealth War Grave of 6/2425 Private John Rutherford Alexander, serving with the 1st/6th Northumberland Fusiliers, (Territorial) (149 Brigade, 50th Northumbrian Division)who died 30/04/1915.

Son of Thomas and Hannah Alexander of 18 Seafield Terrace, South Shields. (His father died in May 1932, aged 88. His mother died on 20 July 1908, aged 57. There is a family headstone in Harton Cemetery.)

Brother: James Robertson Alexander – Died on the Yangtze River on 18 (or 13 ?) August 1903, aged 25 (and was interred at Kiukiang, China). Sister: Grace Craig Alexander – Died 15 July 1892, aged 12.

His birth was registered in South Shields during the June quarter of 1887. He resided at 51 Winchester Street, South Shields (in July 1908 – when his mother died) and at 18 Seafield Terrace, South Shields. He enlisted in Newcastle. He had gone to the front only three weeks before he was KIA (‘Gazette’). He arrived in France on 19 April 1915 and was thus awarded the 1914-5 Star.

His photograph appeared in the ‘Gazette’ on Saturday 8 May 1915.
