He was born in South Shields on 7 February 1883. Elder son of William Emiley Octavius Scott J.P. (a solicitor) and Mary Anne Scott of Belle Vue, Harton, South Shields. [His father died on 29 November 1944, aged 93. His mother died on 2 September 1925, aged 65. There is a family headstone in Harton Cemetery.]

He attended South Shields’ Boys’ High School, being admitted on 23 March 1896. He left in December 1897 to go to Peterborough School. He worked as a lawyer.
He arrived in France on 14 July 1916. He served as the Regimental Bombing Officer. His parents received a letter from his Colonel offering them his condolences. The South Shields’ Golf Club Roll of Honour lists his rank as ‘Captain’.
