In Venray War Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 4342586 Lance Corporal James Worthington, serving with the Suffolk Regiment who died 18/10/1944.

In Wheatley Hill cemetery is a headstone which reads:-

Beloved wife of
Anthony Worthington
Died Nov. 15th 1931
Also their son
James
Who fell in action
Oct. 15th 1944
Also their son
Abraham
Died Feb. 13th 1946

William Kirby has submitted the following:

James Worthington was born in 1910 at Easington, the son of Anthony and Alice Worthington of Patton Street, Wheatley Hill.

The 1911 Census shows Anthony, coal miner aged 33, his wife Alice aged 30; sons Anthony aged 11; John Willie aged 8; Abram aged 7; James aged 6 months; daughters Mary Alice aged 10; Eliza aged 3.

In 1936 James married Rhoda Manchester.

When he enlisted his first regiment was the East Riding Regiment (Duke of York's Own).

James Worthington is remembered in Wheatley Hill on W114.01, W114.05 and W114.06
