William Kirby and Brenda McMahon have submitted the following:-
Abraham was born to his parents Charles and Hannah (nee Mason) at Seaham in 1893.
The 1901 census shows his father working as a deputy overman in a coal mine. The couple had several children together including Margaret, John (deputy station minder below ground), Sarah, Charles, Mary, John, Joseph and infant Rose. The family wre living at 10, Cooke, Street, New Seaham.
Unfortunately, both parents died before the 1911 census so it seems the children were split up amongst the family. Father Charles died February 24th 1909 whilst his wife Hannah died January 23rd 1903.
So 1911 census shows 17-year-old Abraham living with his relative Margaret Mason (aunt) and her family at 1 Park View, New Seaham.
No service records are available for Abraham Hoy except that he died 2 days before the Armistice on November 9th 1918.
He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
His brother John Hoy also died in the Great War being killed in action March 11th 1915.
Abraham Hoy is remembered at Seaham on S117.04 and S117.14 and at Sunderland in S140.048 part 7 page 141
