Yore, O., Stoker, 1916
On Chatham Naval Memorial is the name of 5441S Stoker Owen Yore serving with the H.M.S Tiger Royal Naval Reserve who died 31/05/1916

William Kirby and Brenda McMahon have submitted the following:-

Owen was born on 28th February 1897 at South Hylton, Sunderland. He was baptised shortly afterwards on April 11th 1897.

He was the son of Peter, a coal mine, and his wife Elizabeth (nee Docherty). The couple married in 1884 and went on to have 13 children but unfortunately 1 died.

By 1911 most of the male family members were working as miners in the pit. Owen aged 14 was a pony driver underground.

At the outbreak of war Owen joined Royal Naval Reserve. He was a stoker with the service number 5441/S. He was posted to H.M.S. Tiger which later took part in the Battle of Jutland.

Tiger was hit 18 times during the engagement, all but one fired by the Moltke. 24 sailors were killed (including Owen) and 46 wounded.

It is recorded that Owen was killed or died as a direct result of enemy action. He was buried at sea.

Owen Yore is remembered at Seaham Harbour on S117.20
