Seaham Cemetery

In Princess Road Cemetery Seaham Harbour is the Commonwealth War Grave of 1628 Driver Alfred Herbert Forster serving with 3rd Northumbrian Brigade, Royal Field Artillery who died 09/09/1915.

William Kirby and Brenda McMahon have submitted the following:-

Alfred was born in 1899 at East Easington, Durham. His parents were George Dixon Forster (died 1920) and Elizabeth Alice (nee Hutchinson). They had married in 1898.

The 1901 census shows the family living at 6 Cordelia Terrace, Seaham Harbour. Alfred had a younger sister, Edith Maud. His father, George, was a grocer’s assistant.

By 1911 family the household totalled 8 including a servant. Another 3 sisters had arrived since the last census ie Jane Elizabeth, Alice and Ursula. Alfred was the eldest and only son.

His father, George was now a grocer working from his home, 6 North Railway Street who was also an employer of workers.

On the outbreak of War in August 1914 Alfred enlisted and joined the 3rd Northumbrian Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Records for this young soldier are not available except that he died at a Newcastle hospital of appendicitis on Thursday 9th September 1915.

His mother by then a widow added 'Thy will be done' to his headstone in Seaham Cemetery.

Alfred Herbert Forster is not remembered on a local War Memorial.
