C.H. Bolton
Royal Artillery
27th January 1940 age 38

Lovingly remembered
By his wife and son

Son of Henry and Matilda Bolton; husband of Mary Ethel Bolton of Deneside, Seaham.

Walter Kirby and Brenda McMahon have submitted the following:-

Charles was born at Sunderland in 1901 to his parents Henry and Matilda (nee Warren). They were married at Sunderland in 1898 and went on to have 6 children although sadly one died.

The 1911 census shows his London born father, Henry working as a miner flank man at Dawdon Colliery. His children who were of school age or below were named Cecil, Charles, Stanley, Ethel and Dora.

The family lived at 18 Stavordale St, West Dawdon at that time.

Charles married his sweetheart, Mary Ethel Richardson on October 11th 1924 at Christ Church New Seaham. Their only child, a son, Allen was born the following year and baptised at the Primitive Methodist Church on June 24th 1925 located at Seaham Harbour.

Charles originally joined the army on June 19th 1920 at Seaham Harbour at the age of 18. He served as a gunner. He was later discharged as per Regulations 156(6) T.A. on May 17th 1924. He re-enlisted with the Royal Artillery on March 26th 1929.

Charles fought with the army in WW2 and served with the Anti-Aircraft Brigade. His trade was a miner.

Charles died at 418 Westgate Road Newcastle upon Tyne on January 27th 1940. The cause is unknown.

418 Westgate Road was the address used for the Newcastle Workhouse facilities (where the poor were treated) to avoid the stigma of the workhouse association. Although the workhouse itself was abolished in 1930, the medical facilities were taken over and expanded by Newcastle City Council and became Newcastle General Hospital. This hospital was used for military casualties in WW11 so that is why Charles died there.

He was buried at the church he was married in Christ Church New Seaham on February 1st 1940.

Charles Henry Bolton is remembered at Seaham on S117.04, S117.10 and S117.35
