The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 25/2/1916 reports:
"Seaham man killed in East Africa.
Intimation has been received that Private Wm. Carlyle Goodwill, of the 7th South African Light Infantry, late of Seaham Harbour, was killed in action in East Africa on February 12. Private Goodwill was only 24 years of age, and had been in South Africa for two years. He was step-brother to Capt. C.W. Spanton, Adjutant of the 22nd D.L.I."
