In Tidworth Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 191716 Lance Serjeant Joseph Short Curtis, serving with the Durham Light Infantry who died 29/01/1916.

The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 01/02/1916 reports:
“Murton Colliery Soldier’s Death After Accident”.
Lance-Sergt. Joseph Short Curtis, attached to the 19th D.L.I., who was seriously injured while practising bomb-throwing, died early on Saturday morning. Deceased was 27 years of age, and leaves a widow and three children living at Seaham Harbour.”
