Stan Gray has submitted the following:-
Fred was born in 1916 the son of Joseph and Phyllis Bates.
In 1937 he married Alice Bates. They had a son Joseph Frederick.
In 1939 Joseph (1879, Hewer), Phyllis (1880) with their children William (1919) and Rhoda (1923) are living at 10 Luke Terrace. Alice (1918) and her son are living at Theodore Cottage, Thornley. Fred is not at home.
Fred joined the Durham Light Infantry and was died of wounds 21st May 1940. Alice later moved to Hesleden.
Fred Bates is remembered at Wheatley Hill on W114.01 and W114.06 at Blackhall Colliery on B144.01 and at Hesleden on H124.06
He is also remembered in The DLI Book of Remembrance page 30 and in the Battlion History page 306
