Winter, J., L/Cpl., 1917
In Mount Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport is the Commonwealth War Grave of 307248 Lance Corporal Joseph Winter serving with 1/8th Battalion West Yorkshire (Prince of Wales’s Own) who died 26/07/1917.

William Kirby and Brenda McMahon have submitted the following:-

Joseph was born at Bishop Auckland (c) 1897. His parents were John and Margaret (nee Forster). The couple had 4 children together all of whom survived childhood.

Father John was a coal miner/hewer. The family were living at Park Terrace, Counden according to 1901 census. Joseph had an older brother Robert.

By 1911 the family had increased to include daughter Florence and brother John. They were living at 11 Frances Street, Seaham Harbour then. The older boys were now working. Robert as a coal miner/trapper whilst Joseph worked as a provision dealer’s errand boy. He was 13.

Joseph enlisted into the army and was posted to the West Yorkshire Regiment. He had 2 service numbers - 6057 then later 307248.

Joseph was wounded in action and taken to 16 General Hospital at Le Treport. He died of wound on 27 July 1917.

Le Treport is a small seaport near Dieppe. There was an important hospital centre located here so a cemetery was built nearby. The cemetery was filled up by 1916 so it became necessary to use the new site at Mount Huon. This site holds 2128 commonwealth burials as well as 200 German graves.

Joseph’s family added the following inscription to his grave:- “Ye shall be mine when I come to make up my jewels saith the Lord”

Joseph’s older brother, Robert also fought in WW1 and survived.
