Gates, G.S., Sgt., 1941
In Darlington North Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 751899 Sergeant (Wireless Operator/Air Gunner George Stoddart Gates, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 26/03/1941.

Simon Glancey has submitted the following:

Sgt. Gates was killed when Bristol Blenheim IV T6065 TR-A of 59 Squadron was lost on a reconnaissance mission to Brest. The Blenheim was returning to its base at R.A.F. Thorney Island when it crashed into a hill in fog at Winterbourne Abbas, with the loss of all three crew members.
