In Darlington West Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 655176 Sergeant (Pilot) Robert Curragh Bell, serving with the Royal Air Force who died 14/03/1942.

P/O Bell was serving with 78 Sqdn. He was a crew member of Whitley V Z9389 EY-U which took off from Croft on a mission to Boulogne. On returning to base the aircraft crashed on its fifth attempt at landing, killing three crew members and injuring the other two.
