Walker, C., Pte. 1915
On Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium is the name of 2992 Private Charles Walker serving with the 1st/5th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 24/05/1915.

The son of Blanchert W. and Sarah E. Walker, of Holme Farm Cottage, East Rounton, Northallerton, Yorks.

Enid Hoseason has submitted the following:-

Christopher George Walker was born in 1895, the eldest child of Blanchert and Sarah Walker, Blanchert was a farm labourer at a farm in Elton near Stockton on Tees. Christopher had siblings Annie, Florence, Harry, Edna and Robert.

In the 1911 census, the family were living at Summerhouse, Piercebridge and it was recorded that there had been ten children from the marriage, but four had not survived. The entry for Christopher had been deleted from the census, and a separate 1911 census entry showed that Christopher was employed as a farm servant at Low Field, Bowes near Barnard Castle.

When Christopher G Walker enlisted at the outbreak of World War 1, he called himself Charles. He arrived in France on the 17th April 1915 and was killed in Action on the 24th May 1915 just before his 20th birthday.

The entry in the register of Soldiers Effects, lists his name as Charles Walker and beneath the entry it is noted “alias Walker, Christopher George” The effects were returned to his father, Blanchert Walker.

I could only trace this man via the Commonwealth Graves record which gave his parent's names. I could not find a Charles Walker through Ancestry records. The 1901 and 1911 census give the names of the parents from which I could find only a Christopher George Walker, and assuming they may have had twin boys, but this was not recorded, so this suggests that Christopher George Walker and Charles are the same person.

Medals: 1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Charles Walker is remembered in Stockton on S138.35 page 25. There is a Charles Walker at Piercebridge on P32.02.

He is also remembered in the DLI Book of Remembrance page 128.
