Hope, W., Pte., 1915
At St Sever Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 2332 Private William Hope, serving with the 1st Battalion, Coldstream Guards who died 31/10/1915.

William Hope was born in 1877 in Stockton-On-Tees, he was the 3rd son of Thomas Hope of Driffield, Hull, and his Mary, daughter of William Harding.

William married on the 16th July, at St Luke's Church Kensington, Harriet, daughter of George Medlock of Yew Tree Cottage, Charing, Kent. They had two children, Donald George Hope born 29th July 1903, and Harriet Florence Hope born 17th February 1907.

William enlisted on the 11th January 1899, and served in South Africa from the 9th August 1900 to the 4th October 1902, including the Boer War. (Queen's Medal with three clasps and the King's medal with two clasps), then with the Expeditionary Force from the 3rd February to the 31st October 1915.

He died from wounds received in action on the 17th October at Rouen Hospital on the 31st October 1915.
