At Pont-A-Vendin Communal Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 11161 Private George Nelson serving with the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards who died 04/02/1915.

George Nelson was born in Sunderland, the son of Francis Nelson, (2 Stafford Street, East End, Sunderland).

George was educated at St John's School in Sunderland, and had enlisted after the outbreak of War in the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards at Sunderland, on the 26th August 1914.

He served with he Expeditionary Force and was captured by the Germans, he died a prisoner of War in the German No 2 Field Hospital from frozen feet on the 25th February 1915. He was unmarried.

He is remembered at Sunderland in S140.48 Part 10, page 215, S140.48 Part 6, page 112, and on S140.106

In some contemporary sources his service number is shown as 1162.
