On the Thiepval Monument is the name of 14373 Private Thomas Elliot serving with 10th (Service) Battalion Yorkshire Regiment who died 1/07/1916.

Thomas was born at Frimdon [sic] Trimdon Colliery, on the 20th August 1886, the son of Joseph Elliot, a miner, and his wife Edith daughter of Thomas and Jane Hall.

Thomas was educated at Ryhope Colliery School and was employed as a miner. He married at Sunderland on the 11th April 1911 Florence, daughter of Charles and Mary Hindmarch of 28 Fulwell Road, Sunderland. They had a son called Charles Hindmarch born 25th January 1914.

Thomas volunteered and enlisted in September 1914, and arrived in France in September 1915. He was killed in action between Albert and Fricourt on the 1st July 1916. His commanding officer wrote speaking highly of him as one of the best and bravest of his men, and saying had he lived he would have gained a D.C.M.
