In Sunderland Mere Knolls Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with family headstone of 1545420 Sergeant Stephen Hodge Carter, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 23/07/1943.

The family headstone reads:

In loving memory of
Stephen Hodge Carter Sgt. R.A.F.V.R.
the loved son of Stephen & Annie Carter
who was killed as the result of a flying accident
July 23rd 1943 aged 19 years.
Also the above Stephen Carter
who died March 3rd 1962 aged 77 years.
Also the above Annie Carter
who died December 23rd 1974 aged 82 years.

He was the navigator on a Armstrong Whitworth Whitley V of 91 Group 24 Squadron OTC, taking part in bombing practice when it crashed into high ground near Stratford-on- Avon.
