In Mendinghem Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 50347 Private Henry Hayles, serving with the West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own) who died 27/08/1917.

Soldiers Died in the Great War states that he was born in Sunderland, enlisted in Newcastle-on-Tyne, and had previously served with the Army Service Corps with the service number 4628.

His son John Edwin Hayles was accidentally killed in 1941.

Henry Hayles is remembered in Bedlington on B15.06 and in Sunderland on S140.048 Part 4 page 71
