Smith, W.E., Pte., 1919
In Sunderland (Bishopwearmouth) cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 50421 William Edward Smith, serving with the Cameron Highlanders who died 10/03/1919.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

William was born in Sunderland in 1892, the son of Edward and Sarah Smith. At the time of the 1911 Census he was living with his parents, three sisters and one brother at 58, Hendon Street, Sunderland.

William enlisted in the Durham Light Infantry during WWI, transferred to the Royal Fusiliers and was finally posted to the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. He was awarded the War and Victory Medals for his service.

In 1919 he was serving with the 3rd Battalion in Ireland. William died on 10th March 1919 at the age of 26 in Ballyvonevie Camp from the effects of a gun shot wound to the head (no details available). His body was repatriated and his CWG is in Bishopwearmouth Cemetery. His parents had moved to 20, Watsons Cottages, Hendon.
