Gardner J. awarded M.M. 1917
The Sunderland Echo 24/07/1919 reports on people receiving presentations:

We are informed that one of the men who should have been honoured at the recent presentation at Messrs. Bartram's shipyard, South Docks, for military service was Corporal J. Gardner, but unfortunately at the time he was in hospital. Corporal Gardner, who is a native of Sunderland, enlisted in the 1st Battalion East Lancashire Regiment in 1893, and served for nearly 15 years in India. When war broke out he was working at Messrs. Bartram's shipyard, and in September, 1914, he re-enlisted in the 7th Battalion East Lancashire Regiment and went to France in June, 1915. He was afterwards mentioned in despatches for rendering first aid and for carrying his wounded captain from the front line trenches to the first aid post, and in July 1917, he was awarded the Military Medal for devotion to wounded.

He is remembered in Sunderland as "Gardener" on S140.168
