S. Jacobs

In Brie British Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 39924 Private Stanley Jacobs serving with the 2nd Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment who died 27/09/1918.

Stanley was the son of John Jacobs and Elizabeth Ann Grey Brewis. In 1901 and 1911 they were living at 11 Brandling Street, Roker.

In the 1911 census Stanley is an Apprentice Ship Plater and his father, John, a Shipyard Driller, both working for an un-named Ship Builder. They give the family name as Jacob, not Jacobs.

Stanley Jacobs married Lena Jenkins in Sunderland on 17th October 1914 and they had a son, Stanley, on 30th April 1915.

He was a 20 year old Ship Plater from 34 South Johnson Street, Sunderland.

Stanley enlisted on the 2nd October 1915 into the 20th Durham Light Infantry with Service number 20/389.

On 20th November 1915, he deserted and was struck off. He was taken into civil custody whilst awaiting trial. Stanley was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with 6 months remission on 9th October 1916. He was then transferred to B.E.F. on the 23rd December 1916.

During his military service he had been treated for diarrhoea, tonsillitis, dental problems and a gunshot wound to his back.

Stanley was granted furlough 24th April - 3rd May 1918 and was staying at 18 Duke Street, Millfield, Sunderland. He was with 6th Y&L at that time.

At some time with 2nd Y&L he received a gun shot wound to his right thigh, and was taken to the 48th Casualty Clearing Station where he died of his wounds received in action on the 27th September 1918.

On 23rd November 1921 E. L. Potts signed for the receipt of his medals.

Lena Jacobs, his widow, remarried in March 1919 in Sheffield and became Lena Potts.
His widow was awarded a pension of 20/- per week for herself and 1 child.
