Menin Gate Memorial

On the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial is the name of 3/10735 Private Luke Burlinson Farrar, serving with the 2nd Battalion, Durham Light Infantry who died 6/02/1916.

Luke Farrar was the fourth son of Luke Farrar of Southwick-on-Wear, Shipyard Labourer, and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of George Clark of Southwick.

Luke was born in Southwick on the 25th July 1884. He was employed at Pickersgill's yard Sunderland. He married at Sunderland on the 22nd May 1906, Mary Jane (4 Stoney Lane, Southwick-on-Wear), daughter of James Foster of Sunderland. They had four children: Luke Burliss born 8th June 1912, James born 13th April 1915, Sarah Elizabeth born 19th July 1905 and Ester Jane born 13th September 1908.

Luke enlisted on the 26th September 1914 and was trained at South Shields. He was killed in action "somewhere" in France, on the 6th February 1916. He was buried in Rotize Cemetery. Age 30.

Luke was killed in the front line, South of Crump Farm which was located near Battalion Headquarters within Potijze Wood.
