The Sunderland Echo 01/01/1941 reports:-
Mrs Osman of 30 Brookside, Rainton Bridge, Fencehouses has received official news that her husband Mr James Osman 50 years of age must be presumed lost at sea. He was at home for 48 hours at the weekend of December 15.
Mr Osman served his apprenticeship with Messrs Doxford's at Sunderland after that he went as a marine engineer on cargo boats but for the last 17 years he has been with an oil company and rose to be chief engineer, which position he has been in for the last six years, the last three on his last boat.
He was a member of the Penshaw Lodge of Freemasons.
