On the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial is the name of 13022 Private James Albert Dixon serving with the 14th (Service) Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 31/12/1915.

James Albert Dixon was born in Birtley, on the 19th June 1887, the eldest son of Harry Robson Dixon, a Grocer, and his wife Emily daughter of James Dean.

James was educated at Birtley Public School and was employed as a Miner.

He married at the Parish Church, Chester-le-Street, 15th October 1908 Isabel (Tuart Street, Chester-le-Street), daughter of James Sterling. They had three children James Albert, born 19th January 1916, but died on the 17th December 1916, Nancy, born 30th April 1910, and Emily, born 23rd October 1911.

James was well known in the district as a Violinist and Entertainer.

James enlisted on the 26th September 1914, and was sent to France on the 8th October 1915. He was shot by a sniper while out with a working party on the 31st December 1915.
