William Kirby has submitted the following:-

Joseph Tennant was born c1874 at Kelloe the son of Joseph and Mary. In 1901 the family are living at Lambton Street Chester-le-Street and father and son Joseph are Agricultural Labourers.

In 1911 Joseph and his father are living with his sister and her husband at 2 West Lane Chester-le-Street both still Agricultural Labourers.

Joseph enlisted at Newcastle 27th October 1814 and then again in 1915. He joined the Northumberland Fusiliers with Service Number 126.

Joseph served in France from January 19th 1917. 28th December 1917 he was transferred to the Royal Army Medical Corps and then sent to the Labour Corps April 4th 1918.

Joseph was discharged with a pension and Silver War Badge No. B27831 15th October 1918.

Joseph died at the War Pensions Hospital at Birtley in June 1921.

Recipient of the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

The Chester-le-Street Chronicle 24/06/1921 reports:-

Military Funeral at Chester-le-Street

The funeral of the late Pte. J. Tennant who died at Birtley Hospital on Wednesday June 8th took place on Saturday in last week and was accompanied with full military honours.

A detachment of the D.L.I. formed up outside the residence of the deceased in West Lane and presented arms as the coffin covered with a Union Jack and surmounted with the deceased's cap and side arms was conveyed from the house to the hearse. The cortege proceeded to the cemetery, the firing party under Sergt. Major Forster of Birtley preceding the coffin with arms reversed and the Band of the Comrades of the Great war Club playing "The Dead March." Among the number present was Lieut. S. Colpitts (representing Major J Turnbull.) The service was conducted by rev. G.B. Beale and at its conclusion the "Last Post" was sounded. There was a large number of sympathisers, friends and relatives prsent.
