CHESTER-LE-STREET

Halliday, F., Pte., 1915

Menin Gate Memorial

On Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial is the name of 145 Private Frederick Halliday, serving with 'B' Company [Bede], 1/8th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 26/04/1915.

Frederick was born in Chester-le-Street and had enlisted there also. He had enlisted into the 1/8th Battalion Durham Light Infantry. (The newspaper report at the time 20/03/1920 shows the wrong spelling of the surname.)

On C105.31 his name is given incorrectly as "Hallider". On other public memorials in Chester le Street his name is given as "Holliday" and his rank is given as "Sapper" instead of "Private". The unveiling programme is also incorrectly printed, as it shows the name as Holliday, F.

Frederick was the son of Ann Halliday, of Dean's Villa, Chester-le-Street, and the late George Halliday.

Information: James Pasby

Frederick Halliday is remembered at Chester-le-Street on C105.01, C105.12, C105.15, C105.31 and C105.40 and at Durham in the DLI Book of Rememberance page 99
