In Boulogne Eastern Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 9257 Lance-Corporal Charles Seyburn Alderson, serving with the 2nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 20/08/1915.

He was born in Consett, had enlisted in Sunderland and resided in Durham.

Charles was an apprentice with Messers Ruddock and Fletcher, upholsterers in Durham.

He had served one year in Ireland, then did seven years in India. When his time had expired in February 1914, he then re-enlisted.

He was popular with his comrades.

Charles died of wounds received at Hooge after being transported to the 13th General Hospital at Boulogne.

When he died, the Nursing Sister Sister Welch wrote a letter that read:

Corporal Alderson passed away at one pm, he suffered very little pain and was brave to the last and was most grateful for all that we did for him. But he had little chance from the start as he was suffering from a shell wound to the leg.
