In St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France is the Commonwealth War Grave of 202907 Private James Albert Anderson, serving with 1st/4th Kings Own Scottish Borderers who died 20/09/1918.

In Ropery Lane Cemetery is a family headstone (H741) which reads:-

James was born 4th October 1887, the only son of James and Rebecca Anderson who lived at 1 Dawson Cottages, Chester-le-Street. He had two sisters Edith born 1886 and Ethel born 1891. In 1911 Father James worked as a Brewery Labourer and James was a van driver for a furniture dealer.

James enlisted in Gateshead and joined the Army Service Corps as Driver T/4/249495. He later transferred to 202907 Kings Own Scottish Borderers.

His mother Rebecca died 24 February 1918.

The Chester-le-Street Chronicle 04/10/1918 reports:-

Pte. Jas. Albert Anderson (30) K.O.S.B. has been officially reported as wounded on 1st Sept. and sent to hospital at Rouen in France where he died of his wounds on 20th Sept. His home is at 1 Dawson's Cottage West Lane Chester-le-Street and prior to joining the army he was in the employ of Messrs W. Clarke and Son Ltd. Chester-le-Street. He has seen much service in Salonica, Egypt and also on France. It is two years since he was home on leave.

Recipient of the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
