Henry Thornton Gray was born in 1881 in Chester-le-Street.
The 1891 Census shows the family living at Red Rose Terrace, Chester-le-Street. Jane, a widow, aged 50, was born in Chester-le-Street, as were the children. The eldest son, Tom, aged 24, was a mechanical draughtsman; Jane M., aged 19; Ethel, aged 17; Charles H, 11. Henry was the youngest, aged 9.
In 1901 the name is given as "Grey", still living in Red Rose Terrace. Jane was aged 60; Thomas, aged 34, was a mechanical engineer-traveller; Ethel was 27; Charles was 21 and worked as a draper's assistant. Henry T, now aged 19, was an assistant marine engineer.
In 1911, still at the same address, Tom Leonard, aged 44, was a consulting engineer, and Henry Thornton, aged 28 was a draughtsman (surveyor).
Before going to Canada, Harry Gray played cricket for Chester-le-Street. On 6th May 1911, the Newcastle Evening Chronicle Saturday Sports Edition Pre-Season Preview stated that Harry Gray of Chester-le-Street had just gone to Canada.
From there he joined the Royal Canadian Dragoons as a trooper.
