Telford, C.J., AC1, 1940
On the Runnymede Memorial is the name of 627498 Aircraftman 1st Class Charles John Telford, serving with the Royal Air Force who died 25/06/1940.

Simon Glancey has submitted the following:

AC1 Telford was killed aboard the troopship R.M.S. Lancastria, which was sunk with huge loss of life when it was bombed off St. Nazaire. The ship was evacuating Allied personnel from France when it was tracked by the Luftwaffe, and it sank with the death toll estimated to be between 3,000 and 5,800.

The vessel sank on 17th June, and it is possible that AC1 Telford’s body was not found for another week.

Charles John Telford is remembered in Chester-le-Street on C105.03, C105.05, C105.38 and C105.40
