Death of a Bewicke Main Warrior
Company Sergeant Major Joe Furness, of Bewicke Main, served his time with the 2nd D.L.I., went to Bewicke Main. He was married in January 1913, and was called up in August 5th 1914 to the 2nd D.L.I. at Lichfields. He was sent to Newcastle to drill some of Kitchener's Army, the 10th D.L.I. He accompanied them to Woking and Aldershot. He was a crack shot of the 2nd D.L.I. The late Capt. Braithwaite offered medals for competition among the 10th D.L.I. at Aldershot last March and Sergt. Furness won the silver medal. He went out to France with the 10th D.L.I. and was made Company Sergt. Major two months ago. He had seven days leave from Sept. 25th. He left England on the 30th and was dead and buried two weeks from leaving home. He was attacked by rheumatic fever and double pneumonia set in. He has five brothers and a brother-in-law, and father-in-law, uncle and several cousins in the service.
