2000 headstone

In Birtley Elisabethville Roman Catholic Cemetery is the headstone of a Belgian soldier which reads:-

F.P.M. Lovinfosse
18.5.1918

Mort
pour la
Belgique

"Patria Memor"

The original headstone had been replaced and the inscription in 2000 was as above.

Felix Pierre Marie Lovinfosse was born on the 5th May 1894at Herve, the son of Felix Jean Martin and his wife Marie Catherine Breuer residing at Herve rue Leclercq 15. He was 1 m 690 high, enlisted on the 4th August 1914 with the Service number: 112/332.

He died on the 18th May 1918 due to drowning while bathing in the River Wear at Chester-le-Street.

The Chester-le-Street Chronicle 24/05/1918 reports the inquest and :-

On Wednesday at 9 o'clock in the morning the funeral took place at the cemetery Elizabethville, the Rev. Michel Verpooten officiating. The Belgian Military band was in attendance and played Chopin's funeral march.
