“The following is a copy of a letter received by Mr. D. McLean, Windy Nook:-
H.M.S. Southampton
1st Light Cruiser Squadron
11th October 1914.
Dear Sir – I deeply regret to have to inform you of the death of your son which occurred yesterday October 10th. He fell overboard whilst on duty at his gun when the ship was at sea, and although every effort was made to save him they were unsuccessful. We all mourn the loss of a promising seaman, who was dear to the hearts of his mess-mates, who, although the ship was not in action at the time, died for his country just as much as any man has or will in this war. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy.
Yours faithfully,
Edward Rushton, Commander R.N.”

He is remembered at Windy Nook on W95.01 and W95.02 and on the List of ships’ crews
