On Helles Memorial, Turkey is the name of 4359 Private Patrick Joseph Norman serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 07/08/1915.

Patrick Joseph Norman (known as Joseph) was born 1886 at Felling in the district of Gateshead, County Durham, one of 9 children, 7 sons and 2 daughters, born to Patrick Norman of Annaugh, County Cavan, Ireland born 1860 and his wife Elizabeth Connor born 1863 at Bill Quay, near Gateshead. His parents were married at Gateshead in 1883. Patrick Snr worked initially as a general labourer living at 4 Railway Place, Heworth, later in 1901 he was the manager of the Railway Tavern, the family lived on the premises. Patrick Joseph now 15 was an apprentice engine fitter and the only bread winner along with his father. Ten years later he was still single and working as a labourer for a shipbuilder, brother William was a billiard marker at a hotel, keeping score, issuing cues and chalk, even serving drinks, John was an apprentice moulder with a tool maker, Andrew was a teacher at St. John’s Roman Catholic School. The family now lived at the Bay Horse Inn, Coldwell Street where Patrick Snr was the innkeeper.

War having been declared Patrick Joseph enlisted August 19th 1914 at Walker a suburb of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and was assigned as Private 4359 to Kitchener’s First New Army, 8th (Service) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, assigned to the 34th Brigade, 11th (Northern) Division at Grantham. Completed their training they were sent as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force to Gallipoli. Departed July 1915 they made an amphibious landing at Sulva Bay on the Aegean coast at Gallipoli on August 7th 1915 with the aim of taking the Anafarta hills.

Private 4359 Patrick Joseph Norman Northumberland Fusiliers was killed in action on the very first day of his arrival in the sector at the Battle of Sulva, August 7th 1915. He was 29 years old and has no known grave. His sacrifice is commemorated as one of the names inscribed, panel 34-36, Helles Memorial, Turkey. The memorial is in the form of an obelisk over 30 metres high at the tip of the Gallipoli Peninsular that can be seen by ships passing through the Dardanelles.

His mother as his sole beneficiary received all monies due to him, a pension and his awards of the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Heslop's Local Advertiser 10/09/1915 reports:

"Private Patrick Joseph Norman, 5th N.F., at the Dardanelles on 7th August. Husband of Ellen Norman, 1b Railway Place, Felling, and eldest son of Patrick Norman, Bay Horse inn, Felling."
