In Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension is the Commonwealth War Grave of 2276 Driver Dalton Carr Brown serving with the Royal Field Artillery who died 28/09/1916

In Gateshead East Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

In loving memory of
John Carr
the beloved husband of Annie Brown
who died July 18th ?1910 ?1916
aged 47 years.
Also Dalton Carr, son of the above
outside Albert Sept. 28th 1916, and was
buried at Dernancourt, France
aged 26 years.
“Fight the good fight with all thy might”.
Also the above
Mary Annie Jane Brown
died March 8th 1945
aged 72 years.

Dalton takes his name from his grandfather Dalton Tickle. He was born the eldest son of John Carr Brown, a French polisher, and Annie Mary Jane (nee Tickle) in Newcastle in 1890.

Dalton lived in Arthur Street Gateshead by 1901 with his parents and 3 sisters. By 1911 the family had grown and moved to Westminster Street, Bensham. By this time Dalton was working in a shop as an assistant tailor.

He joined the army and served with R.H.A. and R.F.A. in 250th Brigade (Territorial Force).

He died of wounds at Albert, France on 28 September 1916 aged 26 years. He is commemorated on the memorial at Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension.

Dalton Carr Brown is remembered at Gateshead on G39.026
