Lee, G., Pte., 1916
In St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 440977 Private George Lee serving with the Royal Canadian Regiment who died 06/10/1916.

Jean Longstaff has submitted the following:-

At the time of the 1901 census stonemason John Robert Lee and his wife Adelaide (nee Wilkinson), were living in Northbourne Street, Gateshead, just off Durham Road, with young George, born on 25th September 1900, and his seven siblings, Charles, James, John Robert, Ethel, Adelaide, Elsie, and Frances , ranging in age from 13 to 2. Ten years later father John had already left for Canada and Adelaide, having lost two children to infant deaths, was living in Deckham Terrace with George and six of his siblings. In May 1912 she and all of their children left Liverpool for Quebec on board the SS Corsican making for Melfort, Saskatchewan where her husband had been farming for a year.

28th April 1915 saw George enlist in the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Camp Sewell, Manitoba, giving his mother as his next of kin and his occupation as printer. They knew he was just aged 15 and he was appointed Bugler 440977 in the 53rd Battalion (Northern Saskatchewan) and remained at Camp Sewell for ten months until the battalion sailed for England arriving in May 1916. Only a month later he was transferred to the Royal Canadian Regiment and found himself in France to join his new unit in camp near Ypres. July saw the Battalion in trenches near Zouave and they alternated between trenches and training throughout the summer. The beginning of October saw the German attack the billets at Albert and it here that young Private 440977 was wounded and evacuated to #9 General Hospital at Rouen where he was treated by Lieutenant Nightingale of the RAMC. George had to have his leg amputated due to gas gangrene and he died on 6th October 1916 from his wounds, he was just 16 years of age.

His name does not appear on any local war memorial.

In Canada he is remembered on their Virtual War Memorial and in their Book of Remembrance.
