In Achiet-le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension is the Commonwealth War Grave of 72390 Lance Corporal George H. Balmer, M.M., serving with the Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) who died 30/07/1917.

Soldiers Died in the Great War states that he was born in Wooler, enlisted in Newcastle and lived in Gateshead. He had previously served with the Northumberland Fusiliers with the service number of 2864.

His brothers James and John also died.
