Hamilton, R.K., St.John Ambulance 1917

Newcastle Journal 23/11/1917 reports:-

The death took place yesterday at his residence, 29 Eastbourne Avenue, Gateshead of Mr Robert Keenleside Hamilton, assistant sanitary inspector and also meat inspector of the Borough of Gateshead. The deceased gentleman, who had only been confined to the house since Saturday last, was well known and highly respected by a large number of friends. He was also a prominent member of the Gateshead Branch of the St. John Ambulance Brigade. He leaves a widow and one child to mourn his loss. The funeral will take place at Gateshead East Cemetery on Monday leaving the residence at 1.15 pm.

Newcastle Journal 27/11/1917 reports the funeral

The members of the Gateshead Borough Division and the Gateshead Fell Division of the St. John Ambulance Association attended under Ambulance Officer W. Donnan. The following acting as under-bearers:- Sgt. Hood, Corpl. Newman, Pte. Johnston, Pte. J. Downie, Pte. Gill and Pte. Morrison. A beautiful wreath from the Gateshead Borough Ambulance Division was laid upon the grave along with many other floral tokens.

It would seem that Mr Hamilton had served with the St. John Ambulance and his friends believed his death was due to his service and explains his name being included on the two Memorials below.
