Robert was born on 27th December 1895 in Cullercoats and was working as a wholesale draper living with his parents at 16, Woodbine Terrace, Gateshead when he enlisted in the Durham Light Infantry on 5th September 1914.
He transferred to the RNVR on 10th September 1914 and was posted to the Anson Battalion. Robert was killed in action on 6th May 1915 in Gallipoli.
Robert Oswald Carmichael is remembered in Gateshead on G39.004 page 4 and G39.051
There is also a "Robt. Carmichael" in High Felling on F32.23
