Arras Memorial

On the Arras Memorial which lies within Faubourg D’Amiens Cemetery, Arras, Pas de Calais, France is the name of 64490 Bombardier Robert Emery serving with the Royal Field Artillery who died 21/03/1918.

Robert Emery born at Gateshead, County Durham, husband of Margaret, enlisted at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, where he was assigned to the Royal Field Artillery (Royal Horse Artillery & Royal Field Artillery). Fully trained he departed for the Western Front as of 1916 with the rank of Bombardier 64490 and posted to the 2nd Brigade RFA of the regular army, which comprised the 21st, 42, and 53 Batteries, under the orders of the 6th Division which had been at the front since September 1914.

As part of the 42nd Battery he participated in 1916 at the Battle of Flers-Courcelette September 15th-22nd, Morval September 25th-28th and Transloy October 1st-10th, all phases of the Battles of the Somme. During 1917 they fought at Hill 70 and the Battle of Arras, April 9th-May 16th, joined by the 87th (Howitzer) Battery of the 12th Brigade which transferred to the 2nd Brigade RFA, May 12th and the Cambrai Operations November 20th-December 6th.

Bombardier 64490 Robert Emery Royal Field Artillery was initially reported as missing and later deemed to have been killed in action, March 21st 1918. His sacrifice is recorded as one of the 34,833 names inscribed on the Arras Memorial which lies within Faubourg D’Amiens Cemetery, Arras, Pas de Calais, France, commemorating servicemen from Britain, South Africa and New Zealand who died in the sector and have no known grave.

Recipient of the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
