GATESHEAD

Jones, A., A/Smn., 1915
In Pink Farm Cemetery Helles Turkey is the Commonwealth War Grave of Z1418 Able Seaman Aaron Jones serving with Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, Howe Battalion, Royal Navy Division who died 22/08/1915.

Brenda McMahon submitted the following:-

Aaron was born at Gateshead on 25 February 1893 to Robert and his wife, Alice Ann. The couple had 10 children together but unfortunately 2 died.

In 1901 the family, who were all born at Gateshead, were living at 74 Sodhouse Bank. His siblings were Alice Ann, Amelia (domestic servant), Mary Elizabeth, Robert, William H., John and, Christopher. By the 1911 census the family was reduced to mother, Aaron (miner putter underground), John (miner driver) and William who is recorded as an invalid, possibly a cripple?

Aaron enlisted into the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve 12 November 1914. His enlistment papers show he was Church of England, light brown hair, and 5’4” in height.

He joined Collingwood Battalion (D1650) from 1st Reserve Battalion 9 May 1915. He then transferred to Howe Battalion on 8 June 1915 where he served until his death 22 August 1915. He was located in the Dardenelles where he went missing during operations and was assumed killed in action.

It is possible that Aaron was killed during the Battle of Hill 60 which was launched 21 August 1915 to coincide with other attacks in the area.

He was buried at Pink Farm (correct name is Sotiri Farm) which was named ‘pink’ because of the red soil in the area. Rev. P Halding conducted the burial service.

Several of the graves had the following wording added, which probably also included Aaron’s:- “Their glory shall not be blotted out”

Also on the CWGC is a reference to a special memorial 158.

Medals:- 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal

Aaron Jones is remembered at Gateshead on G39.004>/a> and at Gateshead Fell on G39.064
