On Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial is the name of Rifleman 8809 John Robert Oxley serving with 3rd Battalion Kings Royal Rifle Corps who died 03/03/1915.

Brenda McMahon has submitted the following:-

John was born at Gateshead in 1890 and was baptised 5 November 1890 at Christ Church Gateshead. His parents were George and Bessy Ann (nee Mason).

His father started his working life as a coal merchant but by 1901 worked as an iron moulder. He was born at Sunderland whilst Bessy, his wife, originated from Plymouth. Bessy predeceased her son, John, dying in 1906.

John’s siblings were Elizabeth, Mary, William and George.

By 1901 census the girls were not listed but brother, William, was a machinist (minder). Also shown is a boarder.

John was killed in action 3rd March 1915, aged 25 years, in the Ypres region.

His father, George, was entitled to any monies owing to his son at that time.
