Lonie, E.B., Spr., 1918
In Niederzwehren Cemetery, Kassel, Germany is the Commonwealth War Grave of 471330 Sapper Ernest Bertram Lonie serving with Royal Engineers, 126th Field Company who died 15/12/1918.

Brenda McMahon has submitted the following:-

Ernest was born to his parents, Abel and Rachel at Trimdon Colliery, in 1892. The couple had several children including: Evaline, Violet, Lily, Arthur, Edith, Abel and, Herbert.

By 1911 Abel (father) had a good job as undermanager at the coal mine, son, Ernest, also worked at the mine as a weighman, whilst daughter, Evaline, was a dressmaker. Abel’s mother , Elizabeth, (aged 92) lived with the family at 10 Rodwell Street, Trimdon Colliery. They could also afford a servant.

Ernest married Edith Marr in 1916 at Gateshead. In 1917 a daughter, Edith was born. Unfortunately, young Edith died in 1924 aged only 7 years.

Ernest enlisted into the army at Jarrow. He served with the Royal Engineers. No record of his military life is available at present.

Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail 09/07/1918 reports that Private Ernest Lonie (Trimdon Colliery) of the R.E. is a prisoner of war in Germany.

He died after the Armistice on 15th December 1918 and is buried at a cemetery at Kassel in Germany. This cemetery holds many bodies of soldiers who died at the nearby prisoner of war camp.

Edith Lonie nee Marr also lost her brother John during the War.

Ernest Bertram Lonie is remembered at Gateshead Fell on G39.064 and at Trimdon Station on T66.01 and T66.02 and at Trimdon Village in T58.07
