1901 Census shows Edward living with his family at 5 St Edmunds Road, Gateshead. His father’s work is shown as draper’s assistant. By 1911 young Edward seems to have decided to follow his father’s trade as he is with about 40 other young men listed as being at a wholesale drapery establishment at 60 Farringdon Road London EC. Whether he was training there or actually working there is not clear. It also shows he was living in the Clerkenwell area about that time.

Edward enlisted into the army at Westminster joining the London Regiment.

He died of wounds at 13 General Hospital, Boulogne on 17 June 1915 aged 26 years and was later buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery.

His father added the following words to his grave :- For King and Country
