Dow, M.C., Cpl., 1917
On Tyne Cot Memorial Belgium is the name of 750076 Corporal Matthew Clarence Dow serving with the Royal Artillery Territorial (R.H.A. and R.F.A.), ‘A’ Bty. 250th Brigade who died 29/10/1917.

Brenda McMahon has submitted the following:-

Matthew was born in 1892 at Forest Hall Newcastle to his parents Samuel and Catherine (nee Bowers). The couple had 8 children but 1 died. Matthew’s siblings were Ethel (b 1888), Lillie (b 1891), Eliza (b 1889), John (b 1898), Josephine (b 1902) and Leslie (b 1909).

1901 census shows some of the family living at 17 Harrow Street in Gateshead but daughters Lillie and Eliza are not listed here. In fact, they seem to be living with their widowed uncle in law, Charles Mackey, perhaps helping with domestic duties. By 1911 the whole family are together again living in 6 roomed accommodation 134/136 Sheriff Hill, Gateshead.

Most of the family are working. Father, Samuel has his own business as a grocer, Mother, Catherine is a post mistress (listed as working for the government) whilst the others ie Ethel and Lillie are domestics, Eliza is a shop assistant as is Matthew.

Matthew enlisted at Newcastle. He was posted to Royal Artillery (R.H.A. and R.F.A.) as a gunner. Service no 834. His number changed to 750076 at a later date. He achieved the rank of corporal.

He was sent to France via Woolwich, Kent on 18 April 1915 and was unfortunately killed in action 29 October 1917 aged 25 years. He is named alongside 34947 fellow soldiers listed on the Tyne Cot Memorial.

His effects were sent to his father, Samuel.

Medals :- Victory Medal, British War Medal and 1915 Star

Matthew Clarence Dow is remembered at Gateshead Fell on G39.064
