The name Aungiers is a Norman name dating from the time of the Conquest in 1066.
Ernest was born to his parents John William (school teacher) and his wife Mary Elizabeth (nee Johnson) in early in 1881 although his baptism didn’t occur until the following year ie 25th January 1882 at Christ Church, Gateshead. His siblings were Norman Frederick (b 1886 clerk in an office), Gertrude Isabella (b 1880 teacher), Ethel (b 1884), Arthur (b 1888) and John (born 1890 died 1891). Ernest himself followed the family tradition as he was also a school teacher.
He started life at the family home at Healy Street, Gosforth, Newcastle but by 1891 they were living at 1 High Kenton later moving on to the School House at Kenton, Newcastle.
Ernest married his sweetheart, Sarah Elizabeth (nee Hudson) in 1906. The following year they had a daughter Mary Stuart Aungiers.
By 1911 his family was living at 20 Eldon Place Newcastle which was a 9 roomed accommodation. The large house also housed his father in law Mr Hudson’s family – Mr Hudson, had formerly been a licensed victualler. Ernest and Sarah later had a home at 32 Primrose Hill, Low Fell, Gateshead.
Ernest enlisted into the Army on 10th December 1915. He is described as being 5’7” tall and of good physical development.
He was sent to France on the 23rd January 1917 where he joined his battalion at Calais.
He went missing on 21st March 1918 and was later reported to be a prisoner of war. A report of his death was received stating that he died on 10th August 1918 aged 36 years at the camp at Grand Carriere. No details of his death were given.

Ernest’s father, John William died suddenly a few years after the death of his son. It is reported in the Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail on Saturday 16 June 1923 that :-“One of the passengers on 11.35 pm excursion train to King’s Cross was found in a state of collapse in the Central Station, Newcastle, and was removed from the compartment to a waiting room where it was found he was dead. The name of the man was John William Annjours (sic) of Hyde Terrace Gosforth”.
