Arkless, J.W., 2nd Lieut., 1915

Newcastle Daily Chronicle 04/01/1916

In Houplines Communal Cemetery Extension is the Commonwealth War Grave of Second Lieutenant John William Arkless, serving with the Durham Light Infantry who died 30/12/1915.

The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 0 4/01/1916 reports:

“Gateshead officer killed.

Second-Lieut. J.W. Arkless, 17th Durhams, who lived with his father, Mr. B. Arkless, at 34 Mafeking Street, Gateshead, was killed in action on Dec.30. Mr. Arkless joined the Army last February, prior to which time he was a student at Armstrong College, Newcastle, where he had taken a B.Sc. degree and teacher’s certificate. Mr. Arkless, who was 23 years of age, was a member of Whitehall Road United Methodist Church, Gateshead, where a memorial service will be held on Sunday night next.”
