Richard was the son of George and Georgina Appleton of 218 Bensham Road, Gateshead.
In 1901 he was residing at 15 Rectory Place, Gateshead. Richard was educated at Gateshead Grammar School, then Armstrong College.
He served in the 2nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry and was killed on the 21st March 1918 aged 20.
Richard Aidan Appleton is remembered at Bensham on B134.02, at Gateshead on G39.003 and in G39.004 on page 40, and at Newcastle on NUT063, also at Durham in D47.013a on page 54.
The NUT063 Memorial incorrectly states Richard's middle initial as a "H".
